Remaining in limbo

Those eagerly awaiting the return of my regular blogging efforts may be disappointed as I am still contemplating the value of returning.  Largely, the run up to and subsequent results of the recent election have left me disillusioned with politics and questioning the value of the invested time it takes to keep this going.

Contrary to the opinions held by some, this blog and others like it do not exist simply for the purpose of criticizing the Progressive Labour Party.  In the very least, they exist as a means of offering alternative perspectives and ideas that hopefully will assist in making Bermuda a better place.  That, in the end, is this blogs true purpose. The problem, however, is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to assess whether blogging really encourages positive change or instead is little more than a case of a preacher preaching to the converted. 

As Phil Wells has outlined in his announced departure from blogging about Bermuda, the climate for offering valid contributions just isn't there.  The actions of the PLP and it's support base have suggested that it would much prefer to be surrounded by a bunch of yes men than independent thinkers.  That it is more interested in attacking the messenger than rationally discussing and debating the message, at which point one begins to wonder what the value of attempting to deliver the message really is.

Sadly, differing perspectives are what we need most to ensure our society remains strong and encompassing, yet it is hard to conceive how any alternate perspective would be welcomed under the present culture.  Thus, are we better off giving the PLP their wish by removing opposition so they have no one else left to paint as the enemy and hope that true opposition begins to rise from within?

While I have yet to throw in the towel and will likely continue blogging, it is at this time hard to justify investing the level of time and energy that once occurred.  Thus, for the time being, expect posting to remain infrequent and likely only to occur on a whim.

Denis,

I, for one, am missing your insight. I respect your choice either for or against continuation with the blog. The problems must seem insurmountable at times. Perhaps you would be willing to make an occasional posting on other blogs during your hiatus.
